Rookie Sensation Chris Bailey Jr. Slides to win at Skyline

 July 19, 2010

On a hot muggy July evening last Friday night the ARCA Truck Series made their inaugural visit to Billy Jarrell’s Skyline Speedway in southern Ohio for race number 5 of the 12 race schedule.

Practice was not a good indication of how well the night would go as many of the Truck Series drivers had a hard time figuring out the ultra slick 3/8 mile dirt oval. That had all changed by feature time as all 50 laps were run under green, no yellows and all but 2 trucks running at the end.

Belleville MI’s Craig Meyers started on the pole and led the first lap. He was quickly overtaken by third starting Brad Yunker on lap 2. Yunker led the next 7 laps before dirt track ace Frank Wilson Jr. of Belmont WV grabbed the lead. Wilson’s lead was short lived as the hard charging Tim Schafer powered by and took the lead on lap 12. Schafer extended his lead and seemed to be in control of the race until fast qualifier South Park PA’s Chris Bailey Jr. worked his way up from his 9th starting position to grab the lead on lap 32. It looked like it would be a three-way battle to the end between Bailey, Yunker and Schafer but Schafer spun late in the race and lost a lap to the leaders as did Wilson.

Yunker appeared to be closing in on Bailey but ran out of laps as Chris Bailey Jr. took his second victory in the ARCA Truck Series this season in the family-owned C.A. Bailey Excavating Chevrolet. Strong running Brad Yunker of Maumee Ohio finished 2nd in his Owens Community College/Champion Credit Union Chevrolet followed by “mister consistency” Bill Withers in the Withers Foreign Auto Chevy in third.  Fourth went to Craig Meyers in his Classic Racing Coupes/Regency Kennels Dodge followed by Kenny Kirsch, Jr., in his NAPA Legend Battery/Kirsch Automotive Chevrolet. Tim Shafer recovered to finish sixth in the G’s Pizza World-Double “S” Racing Chevy.

The next event for the ARCA Truck Series is this Saturday night July 24th at Angola (IN) Speedway’s paved .375 mile oval at Fremont IN.
