Bailey On The Ball at Lorain

Chris Bailey Jr gets his first ARCA Truck Series win at Lorain (Photo by JD Scott)

It was a warm and muggy night in South Amherst, Ohio at the Lorain County Speedway as the ARCA Truck Series put on a show in the Lincoln Welders 100.  Paul Hahn was the fast qualifier and rolled a seven for the inversion putting “Ironman” Bill Withers of Columbus, OH on the pole along with Kenny Kirsch, Jr of Hamilton, OH.

Kirsch was the early leader with Bill Withers in tow.  Rookie of the Year candidate Chris Bailey, Jr., of South Park, PA made a banzai run to the front until a spin stopped his charge on lap 7.  On the restart, Danny Jackson of Cincinnati, OH started high into turn 3 and crossed back under Kirsch to take the lead on lap 8.  It stayed Jackson-Kirsch for the next 31 laps until a caution was thrown for debris after contact between Withers and 3-time ATS Champion Paul Hahn of Canton, MI.

On the restart, Frank Wilson of Belmont, WV moved inside Kirsch for second.  On lap 47 Chris Bailey moved inside Kirsch for third.  Hahn then begins to work on Kirsch at the halfway point.  Hahn muscled by Kirsch for fourth on lap 52 before pulling off with a flat right front tire.  Bailey began working on Wilson on lap 55 and got by him when Wilson got loose on lap 90.  All seemed well for Jackson until he blew an engine going into turn 1 on lap 91 putting Chris Bailey in the lead.  Another caution was brought by Mike Young of Toledo, OH on lap 97 when he slowed in turn 3.

Kirsch made a move on Wilson for second as Chris Bailey, Jr., checked out for the win in his family owned #17 C.A. Bailey Excavating Chevrolet.  Wilson ran second in his Drug Testing Centers of America/Perkins Supply Chevrolet.  Kirsch came home third in his NAPA Legend Battery/Kirsch’s Automotive Chevrolet.  Fourth went to Brad Yunker of Maumee, OH in the Owens Community College/Champion Credit Union Chevrolet.  “Ironman” Bill Withers came home fifth in his Withers Foreign Auto Chevrolet.

Sixth went to Ash Hawkins of Canfield, OH in his A&K Racing Chevrolet.  Seventh went to Mike Young in his Dave White Auto Credit Chevrolet.  Eighth went to Craig Meyers of Belleville, MI in his Classic Racing Coupes/Regency Kennels/Friends of Michigan Animal Rescue Dodge.  Ninth was Danny Jackson of Cincinnati, OH in the Redbank Transport/Lykins Company Chevrolet.  Rounding out the top ten was 3-time champion Paul Hahn in his Hahn’s Marketing/Turbo Air Dry System Chevrolet.

The ARCA Truck Series’ next stop will be at Billy Jarrell’s Skyline Speedway in Stewart, OH on July 16.  This will be the first appearance for the ATS at this beautiful 3/8 mile dirt oval.

Jackson Back On Top at Mid-Ohio

Frank Wilson 2nd, Winner Danny Jakson, Mike Young 3rd & race sponsor Chuck Stranc, CGS Imaging on the Victory podium at Mid-Ohio (Photo by JD Scott)

Lexington, OH – 6-20-10 – It was a banner day for the ARCA Truck Series as they made their first ever appearance at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH.  With a solid field of trucks on hand and an excited crowd of on-lookers the ARCA Truck Series did little to disappoint those in attendance for the CGS Imaging 30.  Frank Wilson, Jr., of St. Marys, WV was the fast qualifier with a time of 1:37.18 and rolled a nine for the inversion which put dirt modified driver Tommy Hawk of Tupelo, MS and Cincinnati, OH driver Kenny Kirsch, Jr. on the front row.  On the start Kirsch jumped out to the lead as Hawk had trouble getting going.  Kirsch lead the first lap before being overtaken by Jackson who sliced through the field like a hot knife through butter on his way to the front.

Through the first half of the race there was a great battle for 4th place between Ashley Hawkins, Wilson, Tim Schafer, Kirsch and Bill Withers while front running Jackson, 2nd place running Mike Young of Toledo, OH and 3rd place Rookie of the Year candidate Chris Bailey, Jr., of South Park, PA stretched their lead.

At the lap 15 fuel stop it was Danny Jackson leading, Young in second, Bailey in third, Hawkins fourth and fast qualifier Wilson running 5th.

In the second half of the race Wilson made a charge while Jackson continued to set sail around the 2.4 mile road course.  Wilson picked off Hawkins at lap 17.  He then motored by Young at lap 18.  Wilson then went by 2nd place running Bailey on lap 22.  Mike Young then went by Bailey on lap 23 and had an exciting battle with Wilson that went all the way to the finish.  But, no one had anything for Jackson who dominated the day in his #51 RedBank Transport/Lykins Company/Doug Miller Performance Chevrolet.

Wilson came home second in his Drug Testing Centers of America/Perkins Supply Chevrolet.  Mike Young ran third in his Dave White Auto Credit Chevrolet.  Two-time champion “Ironman” Bill Withers of Columbus, OH came home fourth in his Withers Foreign Auto Service Chevrolet.  Ash Hawkins of Canfield, OH rounded out the top five in his A & K Racing Chevrolet.

Rookie of the Year candidate Chris Bailey, Jr., of South Park, PA, took the checkers sixth in his C.A. Bailey Excavating Chevrolet.  Tully Esterline of Indianapolis, IN ran seventh in his Rupp Seeds Chevrolet.  Brad Yunker of Maumee, OH finished up eighth in his Owens Community College/Champion Credit Union Chevrolet.  Nathan Trepkowski of Ubly, MI came home ninth in his B & J Auto Center/Ubly Auto Supply Chevrolet and Craig Meyers of Belleville, MI rounded out the top ten in his Classic Racing Coupes/Friends of Michigan Animal Rescue/Regency Kennels Dodge.

The series’ next stop will be at the Lorain County Speedway in Amherst, OH this Saturday, June 26th.

Drivers Go Back to School at Mid-Ohio

(Lexington, OH 6/4/10) — As 5pm on Friday June 4th approached, so did Mother Nature. With tornado warnings, and severe thunder storm warnings in the area, the Mid-Ohio Safety Team delayed the start of what some said was a priceless experience to prepare for “The CSG Imaging 30” at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on June 20th.

As the rain came down in waves, the Mid-Ohio School instructor drove the hesitant students from the ARCA Truck Series around the track, giving them in detail the exact line to run, where to hit the apex, landmarks to look for before turning, and more. “Just riding around the track with the instructor gave me a whole new look of the track!” said Nathan Trepkowski. Nathan was not the only one who felt this way. Tim Schaffer stated “I would have been lost with out coming here today. I’m so glad I came!”

When the weather final passed, the drivers jumped in the Mid-Ohio School Acura TSX’s and took to the first of two 20 minute sessions on the track. With the instructor in the front, the drivers where able to follow the leader to get the feel of the race track, the way it suppose to feel. Then every two laps, like the well calculated double file restarts, the second place car would fall to the rear to allow the third place car to follow the instructor.

During the break between the two sessions, students had the chance to ask question and talk “what if’s” with the instructor. The students also took this opportunity to harass Frank Wilson, Jr., the only driver to get off coarse all day. Apparently, he just can not get away from his roots of dirt racing. “I thought I was in good shape till I hit the grass and then I really picked up speed!” said Frank Wilson, Jr. about getting off the course and getting stuck in the gravel pit.

Due to the wet conditions on the speedway, no ARCA Truck Series trucks ever made it on the speedway.

Thanks though, to the Mid-Ohio School instructors, all drivers at the facility came away with a new view of road course racing. “I think this may be my new favorite track!” said Mike Young. Quickly a voice from the crowd said “Even better then Winchester?” After a short pause, Mike followed with “Even better then Winchester.”

The EMCO Gear Classic present by Key Bank starts on Saturday June 18, and wraps up on Sunday June 20th with the ARCA Truck Series race, “The CGS Imaging 30” beginning at 1:30pm. For ticket information, please contact Mid-Ohio Sport Car Course at www.midohio.com or call them at 1-800-Mid-Ohio.

Hahn Stands Tall at Flat Rock

6-2-10 (Flat Rock, MI)

Canton, Michigan’s Paul Hahn, in the Hahn’s Marketing-Turbo Air Dry system Chevy, took his first victory of the year in the Spectro Performance Oils 100 presented by the Friends of Michigan Animal Rescue for the ARCA Truck Series at Flat Rock Speedway.  In addition to the victory, Hahn set fast time with a time of 12.660.  Paul rolled a 6 to set the inversion for the night’s main event and that put him the 6th spot for the start with Frank Wilson of St. Marys, WV and Mike Young of Toledo, OH on the front row.

Mike Young led the first lap before being overtaken by Frank Wilson.  Hahn quickly moved into the top 5 and went by Chris Bailey, Jr., of South Park, PA for third position on lap 8.  Not wasting anytime, he then went to the outside of the “Ironman” Bill Withers of Columbus, OH on lap 25 for second and made quick work of Wilson for the lead on lap 26.  Hahn took off and lapped the up 5th place before the event’s first caution on lap 75 for a spinning Ron Wells in turn 3. Brad Yunker of Maumee, OH benefited from the caution and received the “free pass” that the ARCA Truck Series instituted this year.

On the restart, Hahn checked out again before another caution for the spinning truck of Ron Wells after contact with Nathan Trepkowski on lap 86. Tim Schafer of Canfield, OH received the free pass.  On the next double-file restart, Wilson was able to make a quick move, and charged inside Withers for the second spot.  Wilson set his sights on Hahn and got within two truck lengths, but a loose condition halted his charge.  Bill Withers was 3rd followed by Mike Young in 4th with Tim Schaffer rounding out the top 5. In 6th was Brad Yunker, Ron Wells recovered from his spins to finish 7th followed by Rookie of the Year leader Chris Bailey  Jr. in 8th, Nathan Trepkowski 9th, and 16 year rookie Amber Collins in her first start nailing down 10th .

The victory was Hahn’s 26th career victory and moves him into his familiar spot atop the point standings and he could well be on his way to a record breaking 4th Championship.

The next race for the ARCA Truck Series is at the beautiful 2.4 mile Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH on Sunday, June 20th.
